June 4 - 6, 2004 was a very interesting weekend. I did something I’ve never done before - I took a photography class. Actually, a seminar - an American Photo Mentor Series Workshop. For the record, I’d do it again. Interestingly enough - it was held at the site of my misspent youth - Newport.
Mentors for the weekend were Rob van Petten and Lou Jones - both of whom were great. Truthfully (sorry Rob!), I was a little taken aback when assigned to Rob. His photos were about as much like the ones I usually take as the Pope’s religious beliefs are like Osama bin Laden’s. Please don’t get me wrong - his stuff is amazing. But what on earth would a guy who takes these stunning photos of gorgeous models (one of whom is his wife!) do with a middle-aged woman enamored of photographing her teddy bear? It was also a bit intimidating to find that more than half of my classmates had done these treks before. And I hadn’t done much more than take travel photos (of Arnie of course) since high school - more (none of your business how much more!) than 25 years ago!
My first thoughts were something like “Oh shit. What have I done????” But first appearances can be deceiving. And fortunately, in this case, were.
To cut to the chase, Rob (and everyone else involved with the program) was wonderful. Not only did Arnie and I get to remain in the class, Rob had a great sense of humour (thank goodness!) and gave me some wonderful tips to make Arnie even more photogenic (hard to believe right?). ;-)
Below are some of my favorite shots from the weekend in Newport. A lovely sail on the harbour, a polo match (my first - can you believe it?!), and views around town. If you’d like hi-res images of any, just send me an e-mail. Flattery will get you everywhere!

Enjoy! -g
p.s. By request - more polo match photos!
